With signs of winter starting to show, it’s time to get the popcorn and blankets ready. One of the best ways to make it through a long and dark winter is to hunker down and watching series and/or movies. Listed in this article are some of the best sports movies and series you can watch on popular streaming services across the world.
Hustle
Adam Sandler’s basketball movie aired on Netflix a couple of months back, and if you’re looking for a little inspiration this winter, you’re bound to find some after this movie. Hustle (7.3 on IMDb) follows the fictional story of a Philadelphia 76ers scout, Stanley Sugarman, who dreams of taking the next step in his career to become a coach.
The life of a scout is a tiring one, and this is one of the reasons Sandler’s character is looking to move on to a coaching position. Aside from coaching being his passion, Sugarman is missing out on watching his daughter grow up. Becoming a coach would allow him to be based in Philadelphia, and not on the road.
His superiors think he is best utilized as a scout, however, and his travels take him to Spain, where he uncovers an exceptional talent by the name of Bo Cruz, a character played by actual NBA player Juancho Hernangomez. The film follows the development of this potential star, as Sugarman puts him through grueling training, further showing the promise the character has as a coach. This movie appeals to all sports fans, regardless of their sports inclination, and is a must-watch sports movie this winter. You can stream Hustle on Netflix.
Moneyball
The next sports movie that makes for great watching is Moneyball. The film follows legendary baseball coach Billy Beane, who receives a lot of criticism for implementing a statistical approach to baseball. As the film starts, Beane is on the brink of losing his best players to bigger teams. He thinks about how his team, Oakland Athletic, is able to compete with the other teams in Major League Baseball given the lack of funding they have.
In the film, Beane goes on to meet Peter Brand, an economics graduate, during a player trade negotiation. When Brand advises against the trade of a player that is not recognized as a key member of the team Brand represents, Beane confronts him, and later hires him.
Together, they apply a statistical method to the management of Oakland Athletic, and the team later goes on to break the record for the longest unbeaten streak in the history of the MLB at the time. A classic sports drama, this is a fantastic film to watch as it’s based on true events. You can stream Moneyball on Netflix.
The Last Dance
The final pick in our list of top sports movies and series to watch in this upcoming winter is The Last Dance, which is the story of the rise of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 90s. The documentary series provides interviews of Michael Jordan, Phil Jackson, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman amongst others, as the Bulls went about the most dominant period of their history in the NBA.
Basketball fans, and sports fans in general, can watch the rise of basketball’s, and arguably all sports’ biggest ambassadors, Michael Jordan. You see a different side to the Michael Jordan that you may have seen on the basketball court, and some of the interesting stories that he and his teammates have to share of their time playing together.
The Last Dance is also available for streaming on Netflix.
